Rio de Janeiro Tourist Attractions
Rio de Janeiro Carnaval
For many people the first thing to spring to mind when thinking of Rio de Janeiro is the city’s annual carnival, and with good reason! This huge event is not only the highlight of the year for the locals but brings in thousands of tourists too. Although experiencing the carnival is highly recommended, visitors should also be aware that this is the busiest time for the city so you’ll be battling for space in everything you do; still, the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval is a spectacle not to be missed!
The Carnaval takes place every year and begins 40 days before Easter. This means the dates are not set so if you want to tie in your visit to the city with the carnival you should check the dates carefully. The carnaval is long lasting and has many different aspects to it, the most popular of which are the Samba school parades. At other times of the year some of these Samba schools hold shows just for the tourists so if you can’t make it during carnaval time you can still see them. Visit the Museo do Carnaval in the city to find out more about the history of this big event.
Rio de Janeiro’s Beaches
After the Carnaval it’s probably the beaches that many visitors think of amongst Rio de Janeiro’s top attractions. The city’s South Zone has the best of these and the most popular tourist spots too. The most famous is of course Copacabana, though two other excellent beaches are Ipanema and Arpoador.
Landmarks of Rio de Janeiro
The city’s two most famous landmarks are Christ the Redeemer, and the Sugar Loaf Mountains, both of which give visitors fantastic views over Rio.
The Sugar Loaf Mountains consist of one large one and a smaller one and can be reached by cable car. Christ the Redeemer Statue on the other hand can be reached by foot, for those visitors feeling energetic, or via the 115 year old tram, Trem do Corcovado. If you take the tram you’ll journey over the Tijuca National Park, a large rainforest which is the biggest urban forest in the world, and home to many plants and animals.
Architecture of Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro features some great architecture, ranging from the very modern to the 1700’s. The old Imperial Palace, Paco Imperial, was built in 1743, and Itamaraty Palace was built in the late 1890’s. The City Theatre (Teatro Municipal) was built in 1909 and was based on the Paris Opera House. To the other extreme is the modern cathedral, Catedral Metropolitana built in a modern cone shape.
