The Tourist Attractions of Chile
With such a diversity of landscapes in Chile it’s the kind of destination that is best experienced by touring, as staying in just one place cannot give visitors a real sense for Chile. However, being such a long country, covering the whole length of it is a difficult task within the confines of a couple of weeks, so here are some of the highlights…
Santiago
The starting point for many visitors to Chile is Santiago as this is where international flights to Chile will land. The capital and largest city is located inland, within the Central Valley, about half way down the country and is a beautiful city, well worth exploration. Its attractive parks and interesting architecture are the top attractions. This includes Parque Metropolitano which sits at a higher elevation and has excellent views of the city and even the Andes on a clear day. You’ll also find a botanical garden and a zoo here, plus two swimming pools perfect for a dip on a warm day!
Wine lovers will know that Chile produces some excellent wines. One of the country’s largest producers is Concha y Toro and you can enjoy wine tasting with them right here in Santiago.
National Parks in Chile
Chile has several national parks, perfect for experiencing some of this country’s great scenic beauty. In the far south, at the southern end of the Andes is Torres del Paine National Park. You’ll find glaciers, lakes and rock towers here. In the Lake District of Chile, called Villarrica, is another, Huerquehue National Park. This features Volcano Villarrica which you can hike to the summit of as well as hot springs, caves and more.
Coastal Chile
With such a long coastline there are countless towns, cities and villages to visit, and of course a great many beaches too. In the far south you wouldn’t necessarily want to visit a beach, being less than 900 miles from the coast of Antarctica it can get rather cold here. However, this does mean you can see penguins at the penguin colony just outside the largest town in the area, Punta Arenas.
Other popular coastal towns and cities include UNESCO World Heritage Site Valparaiso with its brightly coloured houses. The duty free zone that encompasses the coastal town of Iquique is becoming popular and steadily being developed to cater for more visitors to its beaches.
When Should You Visit Chile?
With seven major climates experienced from one end of Chile to the other choosing a good time to visit can be a challenge! Climates range from desert in the north, Mediterranean in the centre, and Oceanic in the south. You can rely on four seasons throughout most of the country, though remember that being in the Southern Hemisphere summer occurs during the European winter, and vice versa.
