Santiago is both the capital and the largest city of Chile in South America. The city is situated about half way down the country and in the centre, within the central valley of Chile. Santiago is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, and a great starting point for exploring some of the rest of the country.

International flights to Santiago are welcomed in the Santiago Airport (airport code: SCL). Flying from the UK, flights to Santiago will be indirect requiring either one or two stops, depending on the individual airlines. If you prefer speed over cost, choose an airline that offers one stop flights to Santiago. From the UK this includes Iberia, Air France and LAN Airlines. If you don’t mind taking longer, look for an airline offering two stop flights as these will often be more affordable. Flight routes differ between the airlines, but most will fly via their home country first.

For tourists this means you benefit from the wonderful architecture of many of Santiago’s historic buildings, combined with the modern and cosmopolitan development that has recently taken place here. There are many things to see and do in Santiago, and here are some of the highlights…

Santiago’s Parks

Although a big city, Santiago still has plenty of parks and green spaces to enjoy, plus there is the beautiful backdrop of the Andes Mountains that can also be visited.

Parque Metropolitano is very popular. This is part of Cerro San Cristobal (San Cristobal Hill) and is set on a hill overlooking the city with wonderful views over the city, on the Andes on clear days. For those who like a challenge the hill can be climbed by foot, though the funicular and cable car usually win out! As well as the views from the top the park is home to a botanical garden and zoo, plus two swimming pools.

Parque Forestal is another popular park. Here you will find a scenic park that runs alongside the Mapocho River plus there is the Modern Art Museum and National Museum of Fine Arts. Plus there is Cerro Santa Lucia in downtown Santiago that features beautiful stairways, fountains and more.

Santiago Museums

In addition to the two museums mentioned above, Santiago is a cultural gem with many other museums. Amongst these is the Centro Cultural Palacio de la Moneda, the National Historical Museum, the National Natural History Museum, and the Santiago Archaeology Museum.
