Flights to Arauca
Places in Colombia
Arauca is located right on the border between Colombia and Venezuela. It's a small town with few tourist attractions or amenities. While you may not plan on staying for too long, there are a number of things to see with an easy drive of Arauca, making this a possible touring base.
Flights to Arauca
There is an airport serving Arauca, the Santiago Perez Quiroz Airport (airport code: AUC) but it only operates local flights to Arauca from Bogota. So you can get a flight to Arauca by arriving at the El Dorado International Airport (code: BOG) and getting a charter with one of the local airlines, like SATENA. Avianca is one option and their flight to Bogota travels via Madrid. Air Canada also stops once, but in Toronto. Virgin and United both have the same route through New York City.
Arauca Tourist Attractions
Aquaparque Las Toninas
Only 5 minutes from the city, towards Piquetierra is the Aquaparque Las Toninas (Dolphin Waterpark). The water park has water slides, a wave pool and regular swimming pools. There is also a large playground for the children.
El Cocuy National Park
Southwest of Arauca is the El Cocuy National Park, where you can see the Sierra mountain range and some of the local lowland tropical forests. It's a fairly high-altitude Andes area, so be prepared for thinner air and cooler temperatures. Lots of exposed rock formations make it popular with climbers, but there’s plenty to do if you’re not into rock climbing.
Rio Viejo National Park
Another national park area near Arauca is the Rio Viejo National Park, and it’s also to the west near Arauquita. It's actually across the border in Venezuela, so you will have to cross over in order to visit this park.
Bucaramanga
The next nearest major city is Bucaramanga, and you will find more to see and do if you spent a day there. The Catedral de la Sagrada Familia is quite beautiful, in the Plaza Santander. Not far outside of the city is the Fantasia Zoo with a small collection of local and international species of animals. The small neighbourhood of Giron (to the west of Bucaramanga) is filled with well-preserved colonial architecture as well as numerous shops and places to eat.
Chicamocha Canyon
Not far from Bucaramanga, the Chicamocha Canyon is one of the more popular tourist sights in the area. There are spectacular views, as well as more adventurous activities like the high zip-lines and paragliding. A ride in a cable car is a less thrilling option but still worth the time. You can also do a little canoeing up the Chicamocha River. The national park that surrounds the canyon also has a petting zoo and an ostrich farm.
When Should You Visit Arauca?
