Not a huge tourist draw, but the city of Armenia does give you great access to many of the natural parks in the area where you can see the mountainous regions of the Colombian Andes. Armenia is located in western Colombia, between the three largest cities of the country, Bogota, Medellin, and Cali.

Flights to Armenia

Most flights to Armenia that come to the El Eden International Airport (airport code: AXM) are domestic flights, either from Medellin or Bogota and hence all flights to Armenia from London will transfer in one of these cities. Iberia and Avianca both have the same route, with connections in Madrid and Bogota. For a route that goes through New York City and Bogota, you can fly with Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines or United Airlines. Delta Airlines also goes this way. Average flights to Armenia are between 25 and 30 hours.

Armenia Tourist Attractions

Los Nevados National Park

The Los Nevados National Park is one of the most popular natural parks in Colombia, and it contains several volcanoes and old volcanic craters. Besides just walking to enjoy the forests, it's an excellent park for bird-watching too. The park opens daily at 7:30am, and is not far from Armenia to the north-east.

Colombian National Coffee Park

This is an unusual theme park that has rides for the kids, but also is an ecological park showcasing the coffee industry. There are lovely botanical gardens to walk through, a coffee museum and marketplace, as well as a roller coaster, bumper cars and go karts. You can take the bus from Armenia and the entrance cost will depend on how many rides you want to go on.

Quimbaya Museum

On the edge of town, the Quimbaya Museum is a great place to learn a bit more about the history of Armenia and surrounding area. Many of the artefacts are pre-Columbian, and include gold, ceramics, carved wood and textiles.

La Hermosas National Natural Park

South of Armenia is another large wildlife park, where you will see many species of birds as well as tapirs, deer and many other animals. Like the other parks of the Cordillera Range, it's fairly rocky and has volcanic activity at various locations. There is also a remote canyon in the park that people seldom visit.

Manizales

If you want to spend some time in a larger city, you can take a drive to Manizales. There are restaurants, shops, clubs, museums and a lovely old cathedral in Manizales that is worth a visit as well. After spending a few days in the great outdoors, you might want a change of pace in the city. It's only about 50 miles (80km) away from Armenia, to the north-east.

When Should You Visit Armenia?

The climate in Armenia is remarkably consistent and there is almost no variation in average temperatures. Throughout the year, it will reach a very comfortable 21C (70F) during the day with cooler nights around 9C (48F). Some parts of the year are quite rainy, so you may want to avoid March and April, and then again in October and November. July and August have almost no rain at all.
