Located on the banks of the Magdalena River in south eastern Colombia, the city of Barrancabermeja was originally founded in 1536. Today it is a major port for petroleum and not a typical tourist destination. There are still a few good sights to see if you are coming through the area though.

The airport for flights to Barrancabermeja is the Yariguies Airport (airport code: EJA), which is a small domestic airport. This means that all flights to Barrancabermeja will first transfer through Bogota before arrival. From the UK, Mexicana Airlines stops in Mexico City and Bogota, Virgin Atlantic takes an American route through Miami and Bogota, and then Avianca transfers in Madrid and Bogota. Air Canada and Lufthansa both go to Toronto and Bogota for one more option. Most flights to Barrancabermeja are close to 30 hours long.

Cienaga San Silvestre
The Cienga San Silvestre is a lake that’s a popular spot for locals as well as tourists. There are safe places to swim, picnic, fish, enjoy the shorelines, go walking, or spend some time on the water in a boat. It's only about a 10 minute drive away from Barrancabermeja.
Museum de Petroleo
The oil industry is very important in Barrancabermeja, and the largest refinery in the country is here. And to mark that importance, the Museum de Petroleo (Oil Museum) is a good place to learn more about the impact that the oil industry has had on the city and region. It’s located just outside of town, not far from the refineries.
Avenida del Rio
This is just one of the best places in town to shop. The Avenida del Rio has many hotels along this street as well as many good stores and services, making this a popular hub for tourists and a great place to wander around in the downtown area.
Magdalena River
The Magdalena River is right along the city and can be a pleasant place to spend some time while in Barrancabermeja. You can walk by the river, or arrange for a boat cruise.
Bucaramanga
The next large city near Barrancabermeja is Bucaramanga, about 120 kilometres away. If you want to get out and see another town, this would make a good day-trip. There are old cathedrals, historic neighbourhoods, museums and great shopping
Chicamocha National Park
South of Bucaramanga is the Chicamocha National Park, which you should visit if you are heading that way. The main feature of the park is the Chicamocha Canyon, and the amazing views from the cable car. You can hike, kayak, rock-climb and cave-explore while you are in the park. It's not a very "touristy" place so you can expect it to be quiet and peaceful while you are there.
When Should You Visit Barrancabermeja?
The climate around Barrancabermeja is very consistent through the year and you will find that nearly any time of the year will be the same for travel. You can expect it to be quite warm, ranging between 25C and 26C (77F and 79F) most of the year. It will be a little warmer in April, May and June though. You may also want to avoid travel in either April or October when it rains the most.
