Places in Colombia
Barranquila is an industrial port city situated near the Caribbean Sea in the north of Colombia. It’s a large city that is more frequently visited by business travellers than leisure tourists, but it does have a couple of attractions that make Barranquila a worthwhile stop.
Flights to Barranquila
A flight to Barranquila will come to the Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (airport code: BAQ), about 7.5 miles outside of the city. If you are travelling from London, you will most likely have to take a 2-stop flight to Barranquila. Avianca and Iberia both make the same connections in Madrid and Bogota, but American Airlines has a route through New York City and Bogota instead. For a flight to Barranquila that doesn't go via Bogota, book with KLM. You'll connect in Amsterdam and Panama City instead.
Barranquila Tourist Attractions
Barranquila is a cosmopolitan city but it’s mainly industrial rather than a tourist destination. However, it shouldn’t be totally ignored if you’re visiting Colombia because of the Carnival of Barranquila, one of the largest carnivals in the world. This is the major attraction for tourists in Barranquila.
Carnaval de Barranquila
The carnival of Rio de Janeiro is said to be larger than that of Barranquila, but otherwise, the Carnival of Barranquila is one of the largest in the world. It’s the most important festival for Colombia and the nation has declared it a Cultural Masterpiece. UNESCO has also recognised what an amazing event this is, and has named it one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Carnival of Barranquila has its origins in the 19th century and takes place every year at a time dictated by Ash Wednesday, as it started four days before Ash Wednesday. Like other carnivals around the world this one features parades, musical events, parties, and lavish costumes. Whether or not you visit Barranquila during the carnival you can go to the Carnival Museum to find out more about it.
Landmarks in Barranquila
Barranquila has a good mix of architectural styles, including older historical buildings as well as the more modern office blocks and apartments. If architecture interests you then there are several landmarks to look out for. Art deco from the 1930s still exists around the city, such as Edificio Garcia, built in 1938, and Estadio Romelio Martinez built in 1935. There are older buildings too with late baroque and neo classical Spanish architecture including the restored Customs building.
Museums in Barranquila
As well as the new Carnival Museum, Barranquila has several other museums of interest to tourists. The Museum of Modern Art displays works from the latter half of the 20th century onwards. Local culture can be explored at the Anthropological and Ethnological Museum, plus there’s a whole complex dedicated to the Caribbean; the Caribbean Cultural Park. This includes the Museum of the Caribbean and there are several other museums planned for the complex too.
When Should You Visit Barranquila?

This lasts until November, with some rain in December, then very dry weather from January to March.
