El Dorado International Airport (airport: BOG) is where international flights to Bogota will land. Situated about 20 minutes drive from downtown Bogota, the airport is quick and easy to get to by taxi and with the taxi regulations you can be assured that the journey will be reasonably priced. From the UK, flights to Bogota are indirect and are offered by airlines such as Avianca, Iberia, Air France, Continental Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic Airlines. These airlines fly a variety of routes; for example, Air France flies via Paris, while Virgin Atlantic Airways and Delta Air Lines fly via New York.
Bogota Tourist Attractions
La Candelaria
Bogota’s historical district, La Candelaria, is one of the city’s popular tourist spots. Full of attractive streets, museums and churches this district has a great atmosphere. There are several major attractions here including the large and impressive cathedral that was built in the early 1800’s and is situated on the edge of Bolivar Square. Other sites include the Palacio de Narino, The Church of Carmen, and the Colonial Art Museum. The latter is situated within one of the oldest buildings in Bogota.
Museums in Bogota
In addition to the Museum of Colonial Art, Bogota also offers a range of other interesting museums. The Gold Museum is one example, and here you can see lots of gold and pre-Colombian artefacts. The National Museum was built in 1823 making it one of the oldest in South America. The fortress in which it is housed is as much an attraction as the museum exhibits that feature archaeology and ethnography.
Bogota has several other art museums as well focusing on different periods and styles. There’s the Museum of Modern Art of Bogota that has numerous Colombian painters works. The Denacion Botero has a collection of paintings by well known masters including Picasso, Dali, Renoir and Monet, while the Banco de la Republica Art Collection has nearly 3000 paintings dating as far back as the 16th century.
Parks in Bogota
Bogota is a busy city but with the many peaceful parks and green spaces here there’s always somewhere that visitors can go to relax for a while. Amongst the parks in Bogota is the Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park where there are often free concerts going on. The National Park also features venues for live entertainment as well as many trails where you can enjoy walking, bicycling and more. The Bogota Botanical Garden is a little more formal, and Parque de la 93 is situated in the trendy part of Bogota surrounded by nightlife, restaurants and bars.
Visitors can also enjoy amusement parks of which there are several in Bogota. Mundo Aventura is one, and Salitre Magico is another.
Views of Bogota
If you’re dying to see Bogota from up high there are a couple of options for doing this. The first is the tallest building in Bogota, and one of the tallest in South America, called Torre Colpatria and has an observation deck open on the weekends. Or take a funicular or transferico up Monserrate for great views and to enjoy the restaurants up here.
When Should You Visit Bogota?
Although temperatures can get hot in Bogota visitors should remember that the city is set in a very elevated position so it’s cooler here than on the coast and lowlands. However, being so close to the equator the high and low temperatures vary only by a few degrees across the year. March, April, May, October and November are the wettest months.
