Cali Tourist Attractions
Santiago de Cali is an historic city that was founded by the Spanish in 1536, and although there’s not as much left from this far back in history Cali does still offer a number of historical and colonial attractions and an historic district.
Historic District
At the heart of the old city is a square that’s surrounded by historical, and modern, buildings. La Plaza de Caycedo. This is a good place to start a visit to Cali as several of the city’s important buildings are here including the cathedral, and the Palace of Justice. Nearby you can enjoy some of Cali’s many historic churches – Saint Francis Church and La Merced Church.
Viewpoints Overlooking Cali
Cali has several hills surrounding the city which not only provide great viewing points, but also have their own attractions. Cerro de las Tres Cruces is one of these – a hill on which three large crosses stand, and from here you can see the whole of the city. There are also two hills that have a statue each on top; these are Estatua de Belalcazar, which is a statue of the city’s founding Spanish conquistador, and Cristo Rey.
Museums in Cali
Cali has several good museums. The La Merced Archaeological Museum is situated within a colonial type church in downtown Cali and features art and artefacts from ancient cultures who inhabited this region. Along similar lines, but concentrating on pottery and gold is the Museo del Oro Banco de la Republica which has gold and pottery from pre-Columbian cultures.
Cali Zoo
Cali Zoo is rated as one of the best zoos in South America and it combines an attractive location with a good selection of animals from around the world. The animals are kept within spacious enclosures and amongst those here the Bengal Tigers are particularly popular.
