The Tourist Attractions of Colombia
Bogota
The capital and largest city in Colombia is Bogota. This inland city is situated within the Andean Highlands at a high elevation of 2,600 metres (8530 feet), and is culturally rich with a diverse range of attractions to interest the tourist.
The city has both old and new. Visit some its older neighbourhoods to see some of Colombia’s Spanish colonial influences. La Candelaria is the oldest part of the city and features some lovely churches and a range of museums.
Museums in Bogota include the National Museum. This large museum has over 20,000 pieces and focuses on the history of Colombia. It is actually the oldest museum in the country, as it was established in 1823. There is also the Gold Museum (El Museo del Oro) that features not only lots of gold, but pre-Colombian artefacts as well.
Other top attractions in the capital include views of the city. These can be seen by taking the funicular up to Monserrate, or within the city enjoy the views from the viewing deck of Bogota’s tallest building Torre Colpatria, open on Fridays and Saturdays.
Other Cities in Colombia
In addition to Bogota, Colombia has numerous other interesting and attractive cities to visit. Amongst these is the UNESCO World Heritage Listed city of Cartagena. This is situated on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and features some lovely colonial architecture.
Visitors who enjoy mixing sites with beaches can visit the city of Santa Marta. You’ll find some of the best beaches in Colombia here, and some excellent diving on the coral reefs off the coast.
Ancient Architecture & Great Scenery
Colombia is well known for its ancient architecture and great scenery. The pre-Colombian city of Ciudad Perdida is a popular spot. This city was built between the 8th and the 14th century by Tayrona Indians. Unfortunately a lot of the city has been swallowed up by the jungle and there is not a great deal left now. The site and the location are impressive all the same.
For great scenery Colombia has a number of protected areas. Places such as the Purace National Park are popular, as is the National Park of Los Nevados.
When Should You Visit Colombia?
Colombia has a tropical climate, and because of its equatorial location the temperature does not vary much throughout the year. There is however variation in the temperature experienced across the country because of the mountainous elevations. Despite its elevation, Bogota is actually surprisingly warm with an average year-round high of 19C. The rainiest months in Bogota are October and April.
