Places in Colombia
Colombia’s second largest city, Medellin, is situated in a valley at the northern end of the Andes. It’s a popular tourism destination for business, conference and medical travel, but is also becoming more popular for leisure tourism too.
Flights to Medellin
The Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (airport code: MDE) is about half an hour’s drive away from Medellin, near the city of Rionegro. The smaller domestic airport, Olaya Herrera Airport (code: EOH) only handles local flights to Medellin so probably isn’t an option when coming from London. You can get a flight to Medellin with Avianca Airlines, and travel through Madrid and Bogota, or stop in New York and Panama City with Virgin Atlantic. Continental and Delta both have the same route for their flights to Medellin, through New York and Bogota.
Medellin Tourist Attractions
Though one of the world’s more dangerous travel destinations a couple of decades ago, Medellin is now a far safer place to visit. The city is not without its crime altogether, but if you stay to the tourist areas and take advice and sensible precautions you should be ok.
Business and Conference Tourism in Medellin
It’s the business and conference sector of the tourism market that’s really taken off in Medellin so if you’re planning a conference, or coming here as a delegate you’ll find plenty of great facilities to choose from. The major conference centre for the city is the International Centre of Conventions and Exhibitions ‘Plaza Mayor’, where many of Medellin’s conferences take place.
The hotel infrastructure is geared towards executive tourists too, so there are high class hotel facilities and guest rooms, making this equally as comfortable to any hotel stay in Europe.
Medical Tourism
The medical tourism sector is also becoming increasingly popular as many thousands visit Medellin for the cheaper medical treatment you can get here. The main treatments people come to Medellin for are transplants, heart and cancer treatment, cosmetic surgery and refractive surgery.
Leisure Tourism
Though these other sectors of the tourism industry are very popular, Medellin isn’t without general tourist attractions. Whether you’re coming here for your holiday, or you have some spare time while here on a business trip, there are a number of sights you should see.
There are numerous churches including the Metropolitan Cathedral. This one is a more modern building with an Eclectic architectural style, but there are many different ones around the city. The Church of la Veracruz for example is the oldest in Medellin, while the Church of San Antonio has one of the largest domes in Colombia.
Visitors can experience some culture at the Museum of Antioquia. This is a large art museum that has many pieces by a native artist to Medellin, Fernando Botero, as well as pieces going back to Pre Colombian times. And if you’re interested in art and sculpture another major attraction is the large number of sculptures lining some of Medellin’s streets.
When Should You Visit Medellin?
Despite being situated at an elevation of 1500 metres above sea level, Medellin has a hot climate because it’s near to the equator. Temperatures don’t vary much across the year; both the average highs and average lows only change by a few degrees – the highs between 26.7 and 27.8C and the lows between 15.6 and 16.7C. Rainfall is the main difference – Medellin is very wet, so the months with the lowest rainfall are December to March, and July.
