Cuenca Tourist Attractions
Old Cathedral of Cuenca
Conceived in 1557 the pretty Baroque style old Cathedral (Iglesia del Sagrario) was later replaced because it simply wasn’t large enough for all the people who wanted to attend congregations. The cathedral is still very much in one piece today though it’s no longer used for religious purposes and now serves as a museum.
New Cathedral of Cuenca
The New Cathedral (officially named Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion) is quite different in appearance and style to the old one, but beautiful in its own way. This one was built in the Romanesque style and although construction started in 1885 it was not completed for nearly 100 years.
Park Abdon Calderon
Cuenca has several nice parks but Calderon is the most popular and has a central location set in between both the old and the new cathedral. It’s a popular place with the locals who come here to meet up and chat, and it’s a nice oasis from the city featuring benches, plants and trees.
Monasteries in Cuenca
Apart from the two cathedrals there are several monasteries in Cuenca including the Monastery of El Carmen de Asuncion which was founded in 1682 and is a very attractive church. The Monastery and Museum of la Concepcion is another and this one features tombs dating from the 17th century and religious art.
Cuenca Museums
In addition to the museum at la Concepcion Monastery Cuenca has several others of interest. The Museum of the Aboriginal Cultures offers a good look at the cultures of the region, plus there’s the Municipal Museum and the Museum of the Central Bank.
Sightseeing Tour of Cuenca
A good way to get to see much of Cuenca is on the city sightseeing buses. These are a very affordable way to see the main sights of the city, over the course of 2 hours and include a visit to the Turi viewpoint from which you can enjoy some excellent views.
When Should You Visit Cuenca?
Cuenca enjoys a warm climate throughout the year and there are two seasons to be aware of: the rainy season is from January to May, with the heaviest rainfall occurring from March to May. Even so, rainfall is usually limited to the afternoons so this shouldn’t necessarily limit you from visiting Cuenca at this time. The dry season, from June and December is dry and warm.
