Ecuador Tourist Attractions
The Galapagos Islands
Tourists wishing to visit the Galapagos Islands must come first via Ecuador as you cannot fly there directly, however, it should be noted that access to the islands is strictly limited, so plans should be made well in advance if you’re planning to visit.
The Galapagos Islands are full of wildlife and although barren, have their own unique scenic beauty. Wildlife species can be seen usually at close quarters including sea lions, birds, penguins, giant tortoises and more. With its status as a World Heritage Site and national park every effort is being made to protect the unique biodiversity found here.
Guayaquil
The largest city in Ecuador is Guayaquil, a coastal city with important port. This is one of the best places from which to take trips to the Galapagos Islands as you’re likely to find the cheapest flights from here. As well as being the gateway to the Galapagos Islands this is a lively city with entertainment, culture and great seafood restaurants!
Mindo
As well as the Galapagos Islands Ecuador has many other places, on the mainland, where you can see wildlife and birds. Mindo is renowned for its great many bird species. This is a small town nestled in the foothills of the Andes from which bird tours are organised. Birds you are likely to see include hummingbirds and toucans. Whilst in the area of Mindo, take time to visit the scenic waterfall as well as the orchid farm and the Mindogarden Butterfly Farm.
Quito
The capital city of Ecuador is Quito, an attractive colonial town and renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, reputed by UNESCO themselves to be the best preserved, largest, and least altered historic centre in Latin America.
Visitors are in for a treat if you enjoy historical architecture and churches as there are many here to see. La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus for example is said by many to be the most beautiful church in the Americas. The rest of the city has plenty to see too including some lovely parks, plus El Panecillo. This is a hill with a monument to the Virgin Mary on the top and has views of the city.
The best views of the city though can be seen from the world’s second highest cable car. The TeleferiQo gives views of the city as well as six volcanoes on a clear day.
