Cayenne is both the capital and the largest city in French Guiana, an overseas department of France, that’s situated in South America, just north of Brazil. The city is at the mouth of the River Cayenne on what was formerly an island. Though not well known as a tourist destination Cayenne is an attractive city with a number of sights.

Cayenne Tourist Attractions

Cayenne and French Guiana as a whole is not well known as a tourist destination, but this fact is changing! French Guiana is becoming popular as an eco-tourism destination and Cayenne, being the home of the country’s major airport, is a good place to start a holiday here. Spend several days at least in this small city, enjoying the colonial architecture and the different pace of life to many European cities.

Stroll around the city and admire the numerous different historical buildings. The main street is Avenue General de Gaulle and at the eastern end of this street, near the coast, you’ll find an area of official buildings, on Place de Palmistes, and Place de Grenoble. The town hall is a particularly attractive building with its sandstone coloured exterior and red roof that was built by the Jesuits in the 1890s. Also look out for the Post Office. Cayenne Cathedral is a large and striking building that’s been declared a national monument of France.

The ruins of Fort Ceperou can be seen to the west of the city’s main area. The fort was built in the 17th century but has unfortunately been neglected over the years and is now no more than ruins. It’s an interesting site if nothing else.

Once you’ve spent time seeing Cayenne, spend a little time finding out more about the history and culture of the city and French Guiana in one of two museums. There’s the Municipal Museum and the Museum of French Guianese Culture here.

Back outdoors the botanical gardens, Jardin Botanique de Cayenne, are located at the end of Avenue Charles de Gaulle. Established in the 1800’s the gardens cover an area of 3 hectares and are pretty throughout the year.

Where to Stay in Cayenne

Despite not being a hugely popular tourist destination Cayenne does have a good number of hotels, some of which are top class. There are both independent names here as well as names most visitors will recognise including Novotel and Best Western, so tourists should be able to find something suitable. Prices though may be higher than you would expect.

When Should You Visit Cayenne?

Being near the equator temperatures in Cayenne are fairly constant throughout the year with average highs ranging from 27C to 31C. August to November are the hottest months, and these are also significantly drier than the other months of the year. May is by far the wettest month, so not a good time to visit!
