Historical Buildings in Georgetown

Georgetown was first a Dutch and then a British ruled town and you can still see evidence of both of these periods as you wander around the city. There are many beautiful and wide tree-lined streets with an abundance of wooden colonial buildings still standing. Of particular note are the Victoria Law Courts that were built in 1887; there is the City Hall that was built in 1889 and has neo-Gothic architecture, and also the impressive Renaissance architecture of the Parliament Building.

Stabroek Market is both a historical building and a popular attraction with both locals and visitors. This bustling market is always vibrant and you can buy a variety of goods here. Look out for the impressive clock tower! Amongst the other historical buildings in Georgetown is the Brickdam Cathedral, and St Andrew’s Kirk.

Georgetown Light House

Worthy of its own paragraph is the Georgetown Light House! This historic building was built by the Dutch in 1817 and then re-built in 1830. It’s one of the most famous structures in Georgetown, standing 31 metres (103 feet) high, and the original part of it is wooden with striking red and white stripes.

Georgetown Museums
