Guyana Tourist Attractions

Guyana was originally a Dutch colony but became British in the 1800’s, and by 1831 it was known as British Guiana. The country remained under British rule until it was granted independence in 1966 and is now a part of the Commonwealth. With the history of British rule, English remains the official language so it’s easy to get along in Guyana if you speak English!

Guyana is an interesting and beautiful country that makes for an excellent tourism destination. It features history, attractive towns, and stunning scenery so there’s probably something here for everyone. Amongst the country’s top attractions are the following:

Georgetown

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana and enjoys a coastal location. It’s been said that because this is the political and business capital of the country there isn’t much here for tourists to see, however if you know where to look this is actually a very nice little city and is worth spending several days before moving on. The main attractions include a variety of attractive architecture such as the Parliament Building, and numerous plantation style buildings from the Colonial period. There are museums, parks, a historic lighthouse, and plenty of broad tree-lined streets.

New Amsterdam

The second largest town in Guyana is New Amsterdam. Like Georgetown it too features a range of historical buildings, some of which date back as far as the Dutch colonial times.

Guyana’s Natural Attractions

Inland Guyana has some of the best preserved rainforests in South America. Many of these areas are practically untouched by humans because they remain very inaccessible, however, there are some parts which are accessible to visitors to Guyana. Guyana is well known for its rich diversity in animal life and plant life, making this an excellent destination for nature lovers.

The Kaieteur National Park is one of the country’s top attractions, and in turn its top attraction is the Kaieteur Falls. This beautiful waterfall may not be as wide as Niagara Falls but they are five times higher and have an immense water flow, making them very impressive.

When Should You Visit Guyana?

There’s a tropical climate in Guyana and two rainy seasons that are best avoided between mid-May and August, and mid-November to mid-January. If you’re avoiding these months this doesn’t leave too much time to visit Guyana, but with the threat of flash flooding during rainy seasons, the dry seasons are definitely the best times to come.
