Situated in the south west of Paraguay, near the border with Argentina, is the city of Asuncion. This is the capital and also the largest city in Paraguay, and like the rest of the country it hasn’t really made it onto the tourist maps yet. Don’t think this means there’s nothing to see here though, as Asuncion is actually a lovely city to visit.

Flights to Asuncion

Asuncion’s airport is the Silvio Petirossi International Airport (airport code: ASU) which is located in a suburb of the city. From the airport you can use the local bus line or taxis to make the relatively short journey to the city centre. This is the main international air hub for the country so you can usually find a variety of airlines offering flights to Asuncion. From the UK though, these will be indirect flights with one or two connections. One stop flights to Asuncion from the UK via Sao Paulo are provided by TAM Linhas Aereas. Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM, and Aerolineas Argentinas are among the other choices of airlines who all provide flights to Asuncion from the UK via two stops.

Asuncion Tourist Attractions

Asuncion will appeal to tourists who don’t necessarily want to visit a list of tourist attractions as long as your arm! There are very few specific attractions here, but it is a lovely city to take some time wandering around, meeting friendly locals, and admiring some of the fine architecture. If you prefer a little direction as to what sights you should see, head to the following:

Museums in Asuncion

Asuncion has several museums that may provide a few hours of interesting information and a look at arts. There is the Fine Arts Museum, but the Visual Arts Museum has a better reputation with its temporary exhibits from national artists. The Municipal Museum provides a look at some of the history of Asuncion and is interesting if you enjoy seeing what a city looked like in its past.

Another small but interesting museum is the Casa de la Independencia Museum. This is one of the few remaining colonial architecture buildings in Asuncion and it was from here that the independence of Paraguay declared.

National Pantheon of the Heroes

One of the city’s most famous landmarks is this pantheon where many heroes of Paraguay are entombed. Try to coincide your visit with the changing of the guard ceremony that takes place several times a day.

Lopez Presidential Palace

Another of Asuncion’s most striking buildings is the presidential palace. This is where the President of Paraguay works and also serves as the seat of the government of Paraguay.

Calle Palma

The main street in downtown Asuncion is Calle Palma. This will appeal to visitors because of its quite grand, historical buildings and the opportunity to sit and enjoy a drink in one of the cafés or restaurants, and take advantage of the shops. Asuncion is reputedly the cheapest capital city in the world after all, so you’re bound to find some bargains here! If you do enjoy shopping you should also check out the luxurious shopping malls of Asuncion, such as Shopping del Sol.

When Should You Visit Asuncion?

Asuncion experiences a tropical savannah climate which means that the city remains warm to hot all year round. This is quite a wet city though, with a relatively short dryer season between June and September when the temperatures are cooler – this is winter after all. There are average highs of 23C (73F) in June and July, whereas the hottest month, January, has an average high of 33C and is hot and humid.
