Ciudad del Este Tourist Attractions
Ciudad del Este is a new city, only established in 1957 though it’s already gone through several different names during that time! The city was built to form the third point of a triangle at the Triple Border where Paraguay meets Argentina and Brazil, and this fact, along with cheap shopping opportunities, is really the only reason why an international tourist would want to visit Ciudad del Este.
Being a modern town there aren’t any historical attractions in Ciudad del Este but if you’re interested in spending time wandering around the city you will come across a number of cultural attractions. Ciudad del Este has a high population of immigrants, particularly from Asia, so you’ll see a number of mosques and pagodas that you probably wouldn’t usually see in South America. Another point of interest in Ciudad del Este is the city’s lake, called Lago Republica, which is a nice scenic place amidst the city’s tall buildings.
Ciudad del Este’s main attraction is its shopping. This is the world’s third largest free tax commerce zone and the city’s economy is usually driven by Brazilians and Argentines coming over the border to shop for cheaper products than can be found in their home countries. International tourists should also find that goods here, particularly electronic goods, can be bought for a fraction of the cost of the UK for example. But if you’re planning to buy some cut price goods make sure you test the product first then keep hold of the one you’re sure is genuine, otherwise you could find it switched for a dud.
The Friendship Bridge is one other attraction of Ciudad del Este. This is the bridge that links Paraguay with Brazil and it was opened to traffic in 1965 and is the lifeblood for the Paraguayan economy. The Friendship Bridge crosses the Parana River and is a total length of 552.4 metres (1812 ft).
