Places in Paraguay
Situated in South America, Paraguay is a landlocked country that is surrounded by Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina. It’s a developing country and even though there are many resources most of the population remain poor; this may be one of the reasons why Paraguay has not been able to attract large scale tourism like some of its neighbours.
Flights to Paraguay
Being a developing country Paraguay does not have too much in the way of international class airports, with the main airport for both national and international flights to Paraguay being in the capital city, Asuncion, and is called the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (airport code: ASU). From the UK flights to Paraguay are indirect with one or two stops. TAM Linhas Aereas provides one stop flights to Paraguay from the UK flying via Sao Paulo, or two stop flights to Paraguay are available with several other airlines including Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM, and Aerolineas Argentinas.
Paraguay Tourist Attractions
With a lot to offer it’s surprising that Paraguay remains one of the least visited countries in South America. It certainly doesn’t have the recognition or appeal as neighbouring Brazil does, but Paraguay does have a lot going for it in other ways. This is a very affordable country to visit so will appeal to those who are travelling on a budget, as both accommodation and eating can be done on a tight budget, even in the larger cities.
Asuncion
Paraguay’s capital, and largest city is Asuncion, situated in the south west near the border with Argentina. As the main entry point for international visitors to Paraguay you’re likely to enter the country here, so spend a few days seeing some of the city’s attractions.
There’s not a flood of tourist attractions in Asuncion but the main sights to look for include its museums, such as the Municipal Museum and Visual Arts Museum, the National Congress Building, and the National Cathedral.
Ciudad del Este
In the east of Paraguay is the aptly named Ciudad del Este. This city also does not have a lot to attract the tourist but it is popular with visitors from across the border who come here to make use of the cheap shopping. You can pick up many different cheap goods here, but it’s particularly well known for its affordable electronics. You might also like to use Ciudad del Este as a base for visiting the nearby Iguacu Falls. You can journey over the bridge to get a view of these fantastic waterfalls, noted as one of the most spectacular n the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Encarnacion
You can visit two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Paraguay nearby to the city of Encarnacion, called the Jesuit Missions of La Santisima Trinidad de Parana and Jesus de Tavarangue. Built by the Jesuits these self contained cities were built so that they could integrate the locals into Christianity. The Trinidad site is one of the best reserved and most accessible of its kind in the world.
When Should You Visit Paraguay?
It’s difficult to know when the best time to visit Paraguay is, especially if you’re planning on travelling around the country because there are three different climatic zones here. In the south there’s a temperate climate, but the further north you go the more sub-tropical it becomes, and hence warmer. The difference between east and west is rainfall, with the east being the wettest.
