Chiclayo Tourist Attractions
Royal Tomb of Sipan Museum
From an archaeological point of view, the discovery of the tomb of Lord of Sipan was considered as important as finding Tutankhamen's tomb in Egypt. Today, there is an entire museum filled with the treasures found in that tomb. Jewellery and decorative pieces in gold, copper and silver are the most common. The museum is in the town of Lambayeque, 11 kilometres away from Chiclayo and is closed on Mondays. There is a fee for entrance.
Pyramids of Tucume
There are more than 2 dozen excavated pyramids and ceremonial buildings at Tucume, dating back 1000 years. Unlike the familiar step-pyramids of the Mayan, these are less structured and resemble enormous adobe mounds. There is also a museum at the site where you can see the many artefacts that have been unearthed at Tucume. The site is an easy 30 kilometres drive away from Chiclayo.
Batan Grande
If you are visiting Tucume, you may as well go a few more kilometres to the north, to see the ruins at Batan Grande. There are about 50 mound pyramids here, though many are in poor shape and it’s not as well-preserved as Tucume. The area is part of a forest nature reserve where you can go walking to see much of the local landscapes.
Northern Wari Ruins
Just 20 kilometres from Chiclayo is yet another archaeological site, an excavated city from pre-Columbian times. Unlike the pyramids and temples of the other locations, you will see a more typical city with roads and the remains of buildings here.
Mercado Modelo
Chiclayo’s large open-air market is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and sells anything and everything. You can find vendors with spices, fresh fruit, seashells, textiles, souvenirs and more. One area called the "mercadillo de brujas" (witches' market) has herbs and other magical items sold by local witch doctors.
When Should You Visit Chiclayo?
Chiclayo offers very consistent weather through the year, with only a few degrees variation during some months. It's around 20C (68F) from January until September, and then it only goes up by a degree or two for October through December. While the highs are steady, the lows are not. It does get very cool all year long during the night, but will reach close to freezing from May until September. You may also want to avoid the rainy months of January, February and October.
