Situated in the west of South America is Peru, with a long coastline on the Pacific Ocean and land borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. Peru has plenty to offer the tourist from its expanding eco-tourism industry to its amazing pre-Columbian ruins.

Flights to Peru

There are two international airports in Peru: Jorge Chávez International Airport (airport code: LIM) in Lima, and the Cusco Airport (airport code: CUZ). Jorge Chavez International Airport is however the most common entry point for international flights to Peru, handling 98% of all such flights. From the UK there are flights with one stop to Lima, or with two stops to Cusco. TAM Linhas Aereas, Iberia, KLM, LAN Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic all offer flights to Peru from the UK with one connection.

Peru Tourist Attractions

Peru certainly has a lot to offer tourists and the country is going about it in a responsible way. Eco-tourism is becoming more and more popular here, and although Peru may not yet have such a good name Costa Rica for its ecotourism industry, this is changing. There are some wonderful places to visit all across Peru but the three main tourist destinations are the ones which attract the largest number of visitors; these being Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu, and the capital city, Lima.

Lima

The capital and largest city of Peru is where most tourists will begin a visit to the country and it’s worth spending several days here before moving on to more distant parts.

Lima is an attractive city with a variety of attractions including its colonial architecture, archaeological sites, and museums. The Museo Larco Herrera is a great museum to visit if you’re interested in Peruvian history as this covers 3,000 years of it, or visit the National Museum of Archaeology and History.

Machu Picchu

One of the world’s most famous ruined cities, Machu Picchu is situated right here in Peru. This amazing place was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the country’s top tourist attractions. Many visitors like the idea of taking the Inca Trail up to the city, and this is definitely a great way to get there on a 2 or 4 day hike, however hiking is very controlled so you have to join a group, be fit and healthy, and be happy to sleep in tents.

If the hike doesn’t appeal to you take the train from Cusco. This leaves in the morning and allows you several hours to explore the city before taking you back to Cusco again. Alternatively take a bus from the closer town of Aguas Calientes.

Lake Titicaca

This attractive lake is the largest by volume in South America and 40% of it sits in neighbouring Bolivia. It is one of the highest commercially navigable lakes in the world, at 3812 metres (12,500 feet) above sea level. The city of Puno is a good base from which to explore Lake Titicaca and the best way to get around the lake is of course by boat. Boat tours are available from here for a full day’s excursion or visit one of the lake’s islands for a day or more.

When Should You Visit Peru?

Peru has a fairly varied climate due to its changes in elevation an distances from the ocean. In Lima there is warm and humid weather, especially from June to October – the city’s winter. During the summer expect daytime high temperatures of around 30C.

Machu Picchu can get very hot and because it’s quite open here you’ll need to take care in the sun. Lake Titicaca is a little cooler because it’s so high up.
