Flights to Iquitos
If you are planning a flight to Iquitos, you will be coming to the Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport (airport code: IQT). It's not truly an international airport, and most flights to Iquitos will be coming through Lima first when travelling from the UK. LAN Airlines and Iberia both have the same flight to Iquitos, with a stop in Madrid and another stop in Lima. Mexicana Airlines also has a 2-stop route, but with transfers in Mexico City and then Lima. Flight times range between 20 and 30 hours long.
Iquitos Tourist Attractions
Iquitos has a good selection of activities for tourists, most famously the Amazon. If you’re coming to Iquitos from other parts of Peru, or travelling to other parts from Iquitos you should be aware that the city isn’t accessible by road, only by boat and by plane. This makes the journey even more interesting! Once in Iquitos there are plenty of roads that can get you around the city, so this isn’t a problem.
Historical Landmarks in Iquitos
Iquitos was founded by Jesuit missionaries in the 1750s and the city really grew in the 20th century with a rubber boom. Many grand houses were built as a result of the wealth created from the rubber boom, and some of these still exist today. La Casa de Fierro (or The Iron House) is one of these and it’s situated in a prominent position in the centre of Iquitos. The Iron House was designed by Gustav Eiffel (of the Eiffel Tower), and the prefabricated iron sheets that make up the house and thought to make this the first prefabricated house in the Americas.
Touring the Amazon
Being located within the rainforest Iquitos is a great place from which to base yourself for boat trips into the Amazon. Many tourists head into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve which is one of Peru’s largest protected areas. You could also travel in the opposite direction to Manaus in Brazil.
Belen
More locally a visit to the community of Belen is also a popular tourist attraction in Iquitos. Many of the homes in Belen are built on top of floating structures that allow the homes to float when the waters rise every year. This means the home will go up and down with the water levels rather than get submerged and damaged.
The open air market in Belen is also popular and you’ll see many species of animals and birds from the Amazon being sold here illegally.
When Should You Visit Iquitos?
Iquitos is hot and humid throughout the year and the temperatures varies by only a few degrees between summer and winter. The only real difference in seasons is between the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season is generally from November to May.
