Flights to Piura

Piura's airport is just over 1 mile from the centre of town, but despite the name the Capitan FAP Guillermo Concha Iberico International Airport only handles domestic flights to Piura and has limited service from London. Iberia and LAN Airlines both have the same flight to Piura, connecting in Madrid and then again in Lima. If you fly with BMI, you will have to transfer in Sao Paulo and Lima. Flights to Piura with BMI are usually only available during the week, and take 6 hours longer than the 20-hour flight with the other 2 airlines.

Piura Tourist Attractions

As the first Spanish city to be founded in Peru and only the third in South America, Piura is historically important. For nearly 300 hundred years Piura was under Spanish control and this certainly shows in its many colonial buildings that are still standing today, and are one of the city’s main attractions.

Plaza de Armas

Like many other South American cities, the heart of Piura is the main square, Plaza de Armas, meaning Plaza of Arms (as in weapons). This is part of the original street plan designed and constructed by the Spanish conquistadors in a military-esque grid pattern. The square takes up one block of the city centre and typically these plazas are surrounded by government buildings and other important structures.

Today Piura’s Plaza de Armas is a public park with trees and benches where you can come to sit and relax. Right in the centre of the square is a paved area with a monument, while just across the street and visible from the square is the attractive Piura Cathedral. The Post Office and the Municipal Offices for Piura also line the Plaza de Armas.

Museum House of Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario

Less than a block away from Piura’s Plaza de Armas is one of the city’s museums. It is the home of a Peruvian naval officer who is renowned as one of the greatest Peruvians of all time. Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario was a hero of the Naval Battle of Angamos, a battle that occurred during the War of the Pacific.

Beaches near Piura

Piura itself is not on the coast but it’s just a short drive away from some lovely beaches. Colan’s La Esmerelda Beach is one of the best known, and is notable for its long beach and warm waters of the Pacific. There are also several other beaches within easy reach of Piura, and some are renowned for surfing, such as Mancora Beach and Cabo Blanco.

When Should You Visit Piura?

Because Piura is relatively close to the equator temperatures don’t change much across the year. You’ll be able to enjoy year round hot temperatures with an average high that ranges between 28 and 34C. The cooler, winter months coincide with the driest weather in Piura, making this an ideal time to come between June and November. The rainy season is in full swing from January to May.
