Uruguay is South America’s second smallest country and is situated at the southern tip of Brazil. As a tourist destination Uruguay has a lot to offer including some great beaches and some vibrant and culturally rich cities that are far more liberal than you might expect!

Flights to Uruguay

International flights to Uruguay arrive at the country’s capital, Montevideo, and the Carrasco International Airport (airport code: MVD), situated 13 miles from the city centre. Flights to Uruguay from the UK involve at least one connection and are offered by several airlines. Iberia’s flight to Uruguay goes via Spain, and TAM Linhas Aereas via Brazil, or other routes are also offered by British Airways and Pluna Linease Aereas Uruguayas.

Uruguay Tourist Attractions

Compared to some of its neighbours, Uruguay is a very liberal country and this fact makes it an interesting and fun place to visit. As an example, Uruguay was the first Latin American country to legally recognise same sex marriages, and it has a high quality of life.

Beach Resorts in Uruguay

There are some excellent beaches and beach resorts in Uruguay, making this a god alternative if you’re looking for a beach holiday destination. The resorts on the South Atlantic coast are considered the best and include Punta del Diablo and Punta del Este. The former is a small fishing village so offers lots of charm, and comes alive during the summer when numerous tourists come to enjoy its beaches and surfing opportunities.

Montevideo

Uruguay’s capital and largest city is Montevideo, and it’s situated on the southern coast of the country. Montevideo offers both old and new architecture, including some fantastic examples like Palacio Salvo. This was the highest building in South America when it was built in 1925 and though it no longer holds that title it offers excellent views over the city from the top. Other places to look out for here include the national History Museum, the Gateway of the Citadel, the old town (Ciudad Vieja), and the sexual Diversity Monument.

Colonia del Sacramento

In the west of Monetvideo, on the coast, is the small town of Cuidad del Sacramento. This is a beautiful old town that offers a look back in time to colonial days. The town was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its colonial architecture, and as you wander around this small town you’re treated to period cars too. There are nine small museums which can all be entered under a combined admission ticket, so buying a ticket is worth the money. From the top of the lighthouse you can get some excellent views.

When Should You Visit Uruguay?

Uruguay is not as hot as some more northern South American countries as it has a temperate climate. Summers are warm to hot though, peaking in January with a high of 28C, which is very nice for enjoying the beaches and sightseeing. Winters are cooler and damp, but temperatures don’t drop too low – July is the coolest month and the average high then is still a comfortable 14C.
