Old City
The Old City of Montevideo (Ciudad Vieja) is the oldest part of the city and has several sights to enjoy. Up until 1829 the whole of the old city was enclosed behind a city wall but this was knocked down and now only the gateway to the old city, The Gateway of Ciudadela, remains.
Inside the boundaries of the old city there are still numerous beautiful colonial buildings and architecture to see. Plaza Independencia is a large and impressive square that actually divides the old city from the newer downtown district of Montevideo. Surrounding the square are several of the city’s most important buildings including Estevez Palace – the oldest workplace of the president that was built in 1873 and now also serves as a museum.
In the centre of the square is the Artigas Mausoleum where the remains of one of Uruguay’s heroes, Jose Artigas are kept in a room underneath the statue. You can get a great view of this statue, the square and parts of the Montevideo as a while from Palacio Salvo. Palacio Salvo was built from 1925 to 1928 and was originally intended as a hotel; though this never happened it did rise to fame as the tallest building in South America at the time of construction, and the views are still great from the tower.
Constitution Square is the oldest plaza in Montevideo and there are several important buildings surrounding this square also: Montevideo Cabildo is one – this was used as the government house during colonial times and is now a museum. The other building is the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, dating from the 1700’s.
