As well as being a popular city in Spain, Barcelona is one of Venezuela’s most important cities and the capital of the Anzoategui State in northeast Venezuela. This coastal city not only offers access to beautiful beaches but contains colonial history, making this a popular tourist destination.

Flights to Barcelona

Flights to Barcelona arrive at the nearby General Jose Antonio Anzoategui International Airport (airport code: BLA). You have the choice of several major airlines offering flights to Barcelona from the UK, all with 2-stop routes. BWIA West Indies Airways has a flight that travels through Port of Spain and Caracas. Virgin Atlantic and Continental Airlines both go the same way via Miami and Caracas before coming to Barcelona. These flights to Barcelona will all take more than 35 hours, but you can get there in just 18 with Iberia (transferring in Madrid and Caracas).

Barcelona Tourist Attractions

Barcelona is set on a beautiful coastline of Venezuela where there’s a beach that spans about 60 miles non-stop so this is a popular destination for beach holidays. The neighbouring city of Puerto La Cruz is well known for being a beach holiday destination, while a visit to Barcelona gives you access to the beaches and the colonial history of this attractive city. Some of the major landmarks in Barcelona include the following:

Plaza Boyaca

When Barcelona was first founded in 1671 one of the first areas to be built was Plaza Boyaca. This square still stands at the heart of the old city today and is a popular tourist attraction with its historic colonial buildings surrounding it. The streets running off from the square are also very attractive as they have remained small and picturesque in stark contrast to the newer parts of Barcelona. This makes this area pleasant for walking around, exploring the narrower streets, and small stores.

Barcelona Cathedral

Barcelona’s cathedral is named Iglesia el Carmen and it’s one of the city’s older buildings. Construction began in 1748 but when an earthquake hit half way through much of the structure had to be repaired so the cathedral was not fully finished until 1773.

La Casa Fuerte

Meaning ‘strong house’ or ‘house fort’ La Casa Fuerte is another historical building; this one is a recognised national historic monument. The building was constructed over the ruins of an old monastery. La Case Fuerte itself has stood ruined since 1817 when it was destroyed during the Venezuelan War of Independence and all 1,600 people who were hiding inside this fortified structure were killed.

El Morro

If you’re coming to Barcelona as a tourist you could stay within the city centre but you might want to consider staying in El Morro. This is a tourist district that’s set in between Barcelona and Puerto La Cruz and it features many excellent places to stay, all set alongside a network of canals, giving the majority of accommodation a waterfront setting. There are hotels, apartments and restaurants here and being set in between Barcelona and Puerto La Cruz you get easy access to both cities.

When Should You Visit Barcelona?

Barcelona is set within Venezuela’s tropical climate zone so you’ll be able to enjoy tropical, warm weather whatever time of the year you visit. The yearly average temperature doesn’t change much, going between 26 and 28C (78.8 and 82.4F). The rainy season is generally between June and October.
