Venezuela’s capital and largest city is Caracas, located in the north of the country in the Caracas Valley. Caracas is just a short distance inland from the Caribbean Sea, but is separated from the water by the Venezuelan coastal mountain range.

Flights to Caracas

International flights to Caracas will arrive at Venezuela’s main international gateway, the Simon Bolivar International Airport of Maiquetia (airport code: CCS), located about 21 kilometres (15 miles) outside the city centre. Flights to Caracas from the UK are offered by numerous major world airlines, however all of these are via indirect routes. Iberia, Mexicana, Air France, BWIA West Indies Airways, Continental Airlines, British Airways, Air Canada, Lufthansa, BMI, and Air Guyane all provide flights to Caracas from the UK with one connection.

Caracas Tourist Attractions

Caracas is a wonderful city to visit, with its vibrant atmosphere, beautiful surrounding scenery, friendly people, and a variety of tourist attractions, this should be one of Venezuela’s top tourist destinations. But when Venezuela has so much else to offer many tourists only glance at Caracas and don’t spend the time that the city deserves. If you’re visiting Venezuela to see other parts of the country make sure you allow yourself several days at least to get to see its capital city in more detail.

The Avila

It’s always useful to see a city from above when you first arrive, as it allows you to get a feel for the size of the city and which neighbourhoods are where. Taking the cable care up the Avila allows you to do exactly this! The Avila Mountain stands to the north of Caracas and you can take a cable car to the top, a height of 2600 metres. Make sure you do this on a clear day to really benefit from the far-reaching views over Caracas and beyond. Also on the mountain there are hiking trails and a few small attractions such as children’s rides, a skating rink and more.

Simon Bolivar’s Birthplace

The home in which Simon Bolivar was born is situated in downtown Caracas, and in Spanish it is called La Casa Natal de Simon Bolivar. The home is one of the few remaining well preserved colonial buildings in Caracas and features a museum and artwork. Right next door is the Bolivarian Museum.

Plaza Bolivar

Understandably Caracas is home to several Simon Bolivar monuments and Plaza Bolivar is one of them. It is at the heart of the old town and the monument to Simon Bolivar has pride of place here.

National Pantheon of Venezuela

Five blocks from Plaza Bolivar is the National Pantheon. Established in 1874 this building was originally constructed as a church, and still certainly resembles a church from outside, but this is the final resting place of Simon Bolivar.

Colonial Caracas

Though much of the old colonial charm has been lost from Caracas there are still some places where you can see what Caracas would have been like centuries ago. Probably the best place to see this is in the southeast suburbs of Caracas in the small colonial town of El Hatillo.

When Should You Visit Caracas?

Caracas remains warm all year round thanks to its tropical savannah climate. The average high temperature actually only varies a few degrees across the year, between 25 and 27C (77 and 81F) while the low ranges between 13 and 17C (55 and 63F). You will probably want to avoid the rainy season which is at its peak between June and October. The driest months are January to March.
