Venezuela is a country in South America which is made of numerous islands and a mainland. Venezuela is bordered by Brazil, Colombia and Guyana and sits close to the equator. The country was once a Spanish speaking country and it has been highly urbanized. The country is a wonderful place to visit if you want to see some authentic South American Latin culture and also if you love nature; the region has plenty of lush beaches and forests, as well as some mountains that are ideal for rock climbing. Don’t dismiss the country just because it is lesser known – there are plenty of things to see and do. Whenever you are travelling in South America be a little cautious and don’t carry valuables around with you.

What to do

Visit the capital or Caracas which is a modern city and has plenty of museums, clubs and restaurants. There are plenty of photo opportunities here too. You can sunbathe, swim and eat seafood in the resort areas such as on Isla de margarita which has the longest run of beaches for tourists.

If you want to see the scenery of Venezuela, visit Angel Falls (known locally as Salto Angel) which is the world’s biggest waterfall – the canoe trips operate from June to November. If you want to go hiking then visit Sierra Nevada de Merida where there are several peaks and you can take the journey with an experienced guide. Snorkelling and diving is also available at Parque Nacional Mochima with plenty of small islands and coral reefs.

Birds are also highly popular in Venezuela – go to Cueva Del Guacharo which has famous caves with oilbirds that make a famous screeching sound and go to Parque Nacional Henri Pittier which is a birdwatchers paradise. You can also visit the pink flamingos at the Parque Nacional Morrocoy which is just four hours from Caracas – here you will also see the Scarlet Ibis.
