The islands of Los Roques are part of Venezuela, and the archipelago is situated 80 miles from the coast of Venezuela, in the Caribbean Sea. This beautiful and basically untouched destination does attract many high end tourists though development of the islands and entry to them is restricted, especially since Los Roques was declared a National Park in 1972.

Flights to Los Roques

The Los Roques Airport (airport code: LRV) only accepts small charter planes, so flights to Los Roques will have to arrive in Caracas first. There, you can book a local flight to Los Roques with several domestic airlines such as Avior Airlines, Ciaca or Sol de America. In Caracas, the airport is the Simon Bolivar International Airport (code: CCS). Coming from the UK, TAP Air Portugal has a flight to Caracas that stops once in Lisbon, and Iberia Airlines has a connection in Madrid. American Airlines and Virgin both stop in Miami.

Los Roques Tourist Attractions

When we think of islands in the Caribbean, white sands and clear turquoise blue waters spring to mind. Los Roques is no exception; in fact this is the archetypal Caribbean destination that has barely been affected by tourism thanks to the fact that the Venezuelan government declared the islands a national park back in 1972.

Access to the islands is restricted, as is development. This means the majority of accommodation on Los Roques is small, and low-rise villa type hotels; not the high-rise luxurious resort style hotels you see on so many other Caribbean islands. This gives Los Roques a very intimate and relaxed feel that makes this a great destination for couple looking for a quiet and peaceful place to holiday, or for families, hoping to spend some quality time together. This certainly isn’t the kind of place you would come for nightlife, entertainment, shopping and countless other activities!

Many of the 70,000 or so tourists who come here to Los Roques every year, come for a day trip from Caracas. Caracas is almost directly south of Los Roques and it’s about a 40 minute plane ride from there. Alternatively you can arrive by boat, or arrange an inclusive tour from Caracas that includes accommodation and transport.

Gran Roque is the main island, and only island of Los Roques that’s inhabited. Aside from simply relaxing on the wonderful beaches there are water based activities you can enjoy here too. Scuba diving out of Los Roques is highly recommended and there are several companies offering diving trips, or stay closer to the shore and go snorkelling which also is highly recommended.

Fishing is also a popular pastime out of Los Roques. There are several species of fish that are regularly caught I these waters such as the barracuda, bonefish and tarpon.

When Should You Visit Los Roques?

Los Roques has quite a unique climate considering where it is located. The islands are rarely affected by hurricanes and have a far lower rainfall than other destinations nearby. Temperatures remain hot year round, and rain falls between October and December in the main, though even then it’s not usually heavy.
